Old Wedding Dresses

My mom and I went to the Texas Tech Museum yesterday, it's a small museum, but it's free!  They had wedding and trousseau dresses on display.  I thought I would share some pictures with you, did you know white wedding dresses were not popular until Queen Victoria got married in a white dress?

I love the ruffle on this dress!

The pearls down the front on the right are so pretty!

These dresses are from the late 1800s and early 1900s.  Most of them are the Gibson girl style.
Can you imagine wearing one of these petticoats to make your behind look big?

They even had some veils I could try on!  Of course I couldn't resist!

Can you imagine making all these dresses with a sewing machine like this?

Then of course you would have to vacuum up all those loose threads and pieces of fabric with this vacuum cleaner (about 20 years later).

I hope you enjoyed this blast from the past with me!

  1. Thanks for the little tour, Missy:) I'm all about wedding stuff, including dresses, now, because our daughter's getting married next month! Eke! We're so excited!

  2. I wish I had my Mum's dress she made it herself. On a treadle machine, the veil too! I will check & see if I can find the pics to post on VTT!

  3. Some things change for the best. However, the old saying is, what goes around, comes around. We may be back to these styles.

  4. The first few dresses remind me of Disney movie women... Lady and the Tramp woman who owned Lady, the stepmother in Cinderella - their silhouettes. The museum looks like a fun adventure.
