More Pinwheels!

I finished five more pinwheels!  When I cut out my fabric, it was random and I did not do any counting.  I laid out my blocks to see how many more I will need.
If i want to keep this design, I need four more yellow with ladybugs and three more yellow with bees.  I have exactly enough bees cut, but only enough ladybugs for two more blocks and no more lady bug material.  I looked and I have enough blue already cut to make two more blocks, it will throw off the design a tad but a least I won't have to cut more and I'll use all but two buggy yellow triangles!
Cupcake brought me her ball and was staring at me expectantly waiting for me to throw it for her so she could fetch it for me.
She will only fetch the sparkly pom poms but does not care if it is blue or pink!
Muffin was helping also!
I'm thinking it will look good having the extra blues!

Seven more blocks and I am done!

Pinwheels, Snow and Cats!

I made four more yellow pinwheels!  These ones have bumble bees, every picnic has to have bees!  I have a total of 17 made so far!
The quilt is getting big for a throw and I still have several more triangles cut.  It does not look like I'll need to cut any green pinwheels, I can always use it on the back though!
We have had a lot of snow and my husband asked me to make him an orange meringue pie that he saw on the internet.

My babies have been keeping warm snuggled in their beds and quilts.

So far we have only had school on Tuesday this week, I'll find out later if we have school tomorrow.  I live in a rural community, which means even if the roads are clear in town, there are still teachers and students who cannot get out of their driveways who live in the country.  Next week is Spring Break, I have to take time away from quilting to clean my house.  I am having a tea party the 21st and I need my house spotless!

Have a great day!

More Pinwheels!

I've been making more pinwheels!  Yellow is one of my favorite colors!  I had bought this ladybug material to make an apron for my sister a couple of years ago and this is what is left over.
The yellow below was also bought for the apron, but I did not use it because I felt it was too childish, however it is perfect for my bug themed picnic quilt!
I got the last of my basket quilts for SewSweet Bee 2014!  I love it!

We had another snow day today.  My cats are not normally allowed outside, but Oreo loves the snow!  I'm not sure how to make the video not sideways.  LOL

I think pinwheels is such a fun quilt block!

Pinwheels!

I am already planning my picnic quilt!  I wanted to make one last summer but never had time.  I have some buggy fabric I want to sew into some pinwheels for a picnic quilt!
I can't decide if I want to use the red gingham with the ants or the green leaves with the jars of bugs for the border, what do you think?  I am using the blue and white polka dots as my neutral with the solid blue as a back up if I run out.
I spent a snow day last week cutting material.
I have my material and cut pieces in my picnic basket.
I plan to use this as a picnic quilt, and quilt to keep in the car for when I get cold or we need it for something else.  I was thinking of using denim for the back of the quilt, would it still be snuggly in the car if I do?

Do you have a specific quilt you use for a picnic quilt?

For Feline Friday I have a really cute picture to share.

Butterflies and Ice!

We've had snow all week but Saturday morning we woke up to everything being covered in solid ice!  I did not touch up these photos, everything really is white, including the sky!
I have been busy making butterflies from Lori Holt's book Quilty Fun.

Last year for the Sew Sweet Bee I asked for baskets when it was my turn, I am going to ask for more baskets this year because I want to make one more king size quilt for my bed.  I am going to use the butterflies as a border around the baskets.
I had a lot of half square triangles left over from this month's block and I made them into five inch pinwheels.  These are going to be used as a second border on that quilt too!
So far I have 28 butterflies and eight pinwheels made.  I have a lot more to go for a king size quilt!
I've brought a little spring into my house!

a semi finish!

I bought some vintage ornaments Saturday.  The long blue one, tiny red and green one, and the decorated one were all 25 cents!  The red and blues with the gold trim were $1 each!  I was so happy to find these ornaments!
I put them in a bowl with some green ornaments I had and set them on top of the almost finished table runner.
I decided to use two fabrics and make pinwheels.  I los the "scenes" but like the way it turned out.

I've been filling in for sick teachers at school, so who knows when I will have time to baste and bind it!  One more week before Christmas break!
Oreo wanted to help me.  There was a loose piece of material and he decided to grab it and carry it around.  He was having trouble walking with it between his legs, wish I could have gotten a back shot!
Of course his sister wanted to help!
Then he decided to try to eat it , so I took it away and cut that piece off!
Are you working on any last minute Christmas stuff?

Pinwheels

I've been making a lot of pinwheels!  For my sailboat quilt I had to cut 220 white squares and 220 red or blue squares, all of them 2 1/2 inches.  With these squares I made half square triangle units, and with these I will make 80 pinwheels, the rest will be "waves" under the boats, this will be the sashing.  It's easy, but a lot of work!
I can't use a 1/4 inch foot on my hand crank, which is a Singer Redhead or Red Eye 66.  I have my 1/4 inch seam allowance marked, so it is not usually an issue, but the way I am making my HS (short for half square) units, I draw a line from corner to corner, per the pattern directions, then sew a 1/4 inch on each side from the line.  This is hard to do with out a 1/4 foot unless you draw line a 1/4 inch on both sides of the line.  Well, it seems that the left side of the foot, is a 1/4 inch from the needle to the left side of the foot which gives me a perfect 1/4 inch seam!  Yeah!
I just went through and sewed all of my squares (off and on) and then sat down and cut the middle of the squares.  Then I would iron them open.  Next, I wanted to go ahead and make some pinwheels, so in order to chain stitch them I am sewing the top of the pinwheel and then sewed the bottom of the pinwheel.  When I cut my strips, I did it two at a time so I would still have a whole pinwheel, top and bottom, on one string when it was time to sew them together.
Then I iron them open and sew the top and bottom together.
Meanwhile, I have tins to put my WIP in.  With so many squares, it can get monotonous, so I've been hopping around, doing the different steps at different times.
The left side are my cut squares before ironing, the right side is after ironing and the finished pinwheels, the bag on top are ones I messed up and I accidently cut a whole row white too short so I need to re-cut that strip and sew those squares together..
These are the ones left that still need to be sewn on one side of the line.  Not many!
These are the ones that have been sewn and are waiting to be cut, like I said a lot of work!
Here are the finished pinwheels!  The first picture has 11 and this picture has 10, so that makes 21 finished!  Only 69 more pinwheels to go and 15 units of waves to go!  (I'm trying to be optimistic!)
I have to leave you with a cute picture of Cupcake.  I've never seen a cat that moves as much as she does in her sleep!
So far I have tried three different methods for pinwheels, I think I like this one the best.
What is your favorite method for pinwheels?

Prayer Quilt Ministry

I wanted to share pictures of Kenzie with her quilt, I sent it off a couple of weeks ago and her grandmother gave it to her and her mother on Saturday. I kept it a secret from them and used Mrs. Bassett as my go between.

Amy(the mom) wrote a nice message on Facebook on getting the quilt that I want to share with ya'll.
"So this morning I get a message from my mother saying she had something for Kenzie and could I come get it. I said sure. We all piled up in the van and after nearly losing the wheelchair, it came undone from the lift, we made it. What was waiting moved me beyond words. A friend of mine and the prayer quilting group she is a part of made an amazing quilt for Kenzie. It is so very special to know that as these ladies gathered to make this beautiful quilt they spent time praying for my angel. Such a very thoughtful gift. I am so amazingly blessed to have so many friends praying for us and my girl. I certainly would not have made it all these years without The Lord and prayers that have been lifted. This will be a treasure forever and there aren't words grand enough to say how much it means. Thank you so much Missy Shay and the Kingdom Baptist Prayer Quilt ministry and friends!"

For more information on Kenzie and the quilt you can go here.
You can see the progress of making the quilt here.
Amy left a message on the original post that she wanted to share with everyone.
"I want to thank all of you for this amazing quilt! My sweet Kenzie is curled up on the couch with all of your prayers as I type. It is so amazingly special to me and we will treasure this gift forever. Thank you doesnt seem like enough but I do thank you with all I have in me."

Amy Morrow

I want to thank everyone who sent pinwheels and fabric to help make this quilt for this special little girl.  It blessed Kenzie and her mother both.

Thank you!
