What a Day!

Have you ever had one of those days when quilting?  Tuesday night is my night in the sewing room.  My husband brings his computer in there and I sew while we have the TV on.  I keep an old quilt on top of the quilt I am quilting, because of the picture below.  They love to sit on my treadle. 

I decided to check my Instagram (I know, I'm easily distracted) and this happened!

I finally made both babies by moving them onto the rocking chair, in fact Pippi(calico) bit poor Muffin, show insisted she share the chair with him.  I sat down and could not find my quilting gloves!  Last week, I switched ,y tv cabinet with my treadle, and hung up the other half of my design wall.

I have no idea what I did with my quilting gloves!  Luckily I had a backup! I have these quilting pads I can use until I find them.  That is what happens when I clean my sewing room, I lose things! 

That crisis was averted, but then I was sewing along when I darning foot broke!  I admit the metal part at the top broke over a year ago, but I was still able to use it.  I found this foot in a secondhand shop years ago, so who knows how old that plastic was.  As you can tell, I did not get much quilting done, only about half of this cake stand.

After looking for about an hour, I finally found another foot!  I can't even remember where I picked this one up.  I bet it works better than that broken one did!

My quilt guild made a charity quilt to donate to the "Stop child Abuse Awareness" group here in Ava.  We presented it to the group yesterday.  I had my student take pictures with my phone, so sorry about the quality.  They will be asking for $1 donation for tickets for the opportunity to win this quilt.  They will start selling the tickets next month.  The colors are blue and pinwheels.

Finished Quilt!

 I can't believe I finally finished my quilt!  I started this at the end of last year.  It was the first thing I pieced on my new to me hand crank that was my birthday present last year!  We did a quilt along at church making the great granny square blocks.  Here was our first meeting and everyone trying out my hand crank: http://missyscakesandaprons.blogspot.com/2012/12/church-quilt-along.html
This was my only goal for the month since I was packing to move.
 We have noticed something lately, Custard (in the middle) always poses for pictures!  I just love it!

 Muffin and Tiger are brothers and they were having a bit of a disagreement.

All's well now!  This is a scrappy quilt, I had to buy the lime green but everything else came out of my stash.

 I started with the Gerber daisy material and I knew I wanted to use it for the sashing.  I made the backing on each block solid, just like the solid squares behind the Gerber daisies.

 I used a pink gingham sheet on the back and light pink thread for the quilting.  This way my mistakes are not as noticeable on the back.

 This is Precious, he is now my oldest cat at 14 or 15.  He was a stray so I'm not sure exactly.
 It took forever to quilt since I traced every daisy!

 Here is the quilt waiting for the binding.  Cupcake and Pippi made themselves comfortable.

 I quilted butterflies and flowers in some of the blocks, I even wrote Johnna in one of them.  I decided to just do loopy loops after a while though, to save on time.  Johnna is my seven year old niece and this is her Christmas present.

Another first on this quilt was that this is my first quilt to be entirely quilted on a treadle!  For more on that go here:  http://missyscakesandaprons.blogspot.com/2013/10/october-goal-and-treadling-video.html  This was my only goal for October since I need to pack up my sewing room now.  I'll leave one hand crank and one project out just in case I get all of my packing done.  (I now, that's just wishful thinking!)

I had someone ask me a question, but Dolores you are anonymous so I cannot reply and though I would answer your question here.  My industrial 16 takes a normal class 15 bobbin, which I discovered when I didn't want to wind a bobbin at the quilt retreat and tried one out and it worked perfect!  The ones I that came with the machine when I bought it were black.  The darning foot is the same one that fits on my modern Janome!  I'm going to try my walking foot on it next to see if it fits also, it probably will.

October Goal and Treadling Video

I only have one quilting goal for this month and that is to finish my Great Granny Square Quilt and get it bound (or is it binded?  Just kidding).  It would help if my furbabies would move.

I had some people ask me to take a picture of my feet treadling after seeing my FMQ video. Let me warn you though, I don't like to wear shoes and am usually barefoot unless it is cold.  Here is my video of my doing my FMQ on my treadle.
I was really concentrating on my border, I had not secured it well enough and it was trying to wrinkle on me, so please excuse the look on my face.  Sue, from the quilt retreat, was kind enough to take this video for me, yes I was even barefoot there!


I have found that with the industrial treadle, as I get going, I am only pushing with my right foot.  If you have a treadle, you need to pull it out and use it, it is fun!

My other biggest goal is to get my house packed because we are moving the end of this month!  I think we found a rental in Gainesville, MO, but my friend's husband looked at it and she wants to send us pictures to make sure we are okay with it.  I really don't see where else we would be able to find a rental that will accept all of our cats, have good internet connection in a good neighborhood and won't make us sign a year lease since we are trying to buy a house after we move. Please pray that the Lord's will is done in this matter.  We don't care if it is an old house because it is just temporary.

August Finishes

I have not finished as much as I would have liked this month.  Between house hunting and packing, I have not had much time for quilting or blogging!

I did meet my goal for the sailboat quilt, I got all of my pinwheel sashings done!

Twenty strips of four pinwheels.  They are wonky and need to be trimmed down though.
I finished half of my bottom sashing which is "waves", so I made them all blue.

I need 15 strips of eight HST.

I have the rest already in order waiting to be sewn together, I love using clothespins!

My math is terrible because I have a lot of HST left over and now need a project for them!

 Oreo kept jumping up and trying to grab my camera as I was trying to take pictures, it took 10 tries!  Maybe he was trying to play fetch with it?

 I got about a quarter to half of my Great Granny Square quilted.  I had to stop one day and clean the machine, which I should have done before using it!

I'm making loose flowers and butterflies in the blocks.

I have a lot of work to do so I better get off of this computer!

FMQ on a Treadle

This week on my Design Wall is still my Great Granny Square quilt, although it is really on my machine not my wall!  LOL
I am really enjoying doing my free motion quilting on my Singer 16 Treadle.  She is 123 years old!  This is my third quilt to FMQ, the other two were just stippling, so I am still learning.  I'm enjoying all of the extra head space I have on this Industrial machine, it is a lot bigger than my Janome.
I was told to set my stitch length to zero and that has helped a lot with not having big stitches.  I was also told to loosen my top tension which has also helped a lot.
After spending three days unstitching 18 flowers last week because of my puckers on the back, it is going pretty well now.

I am doing a free form around the daisies.  So far I have only been doing the daisies across the sashing.

Next I will go back and do the daisies in the sashing going up and down.

I am using a light pink thread.
I keep moving the cats off my quilt.  Last night I had a good rythm going when the treadle just stopped even though I was still treadling.  I looked over and my other kitten, Cupcake, had pulled the belt off the wheel!  Crazy cat!  This morning they knocked the spool of thread off and it was tangled all through the legs, and all around Custard, my other kitten.
I had my husband record me doing FMQ on my treadle.  Remember, I'm not an expert at FMQ, but I do appreciate any hints you might want to offer!  I love the click clacking sound the treadle makes!


Oh, and today is my 18th Anniversary!  I need to make my husband an Angel Food Cake, but to be honest, I'm so busy right now I am going to use a mix!  I need this quilt finished by Friday!

July Finishes!

Today I finished the basting on my great granny square quilt.  I want to start quilting it now, but I have a baby shower this weekend and I need to make the cake tomorrow and since I am hosting the shower I doubt I will have time to start playing until next week!  LOL  I used Elmer's glue on the backing and I'm not happy with the puckers, the top I used spray basting which turned out great, so I'll use that from now on!  It was funny to see the cats shaking their feet after walking on the adhesive!  LOL

I finished all 12 of my sailboat blocks last week.

And third, I finished my denim rag quilt!  I did make a mistake on it though, I was not thinking and did not back stitch my blocks, which I guess you should do since I had to go back and resew some "holes" after I washed it.  Lesson learned!

I am just so proud of myself for finishing all of my goals for this month and there is still five days left!

April Finishes

After months of hard work we finally finished Skye's prayer quilt.  We did the great granny square with two wide borders.  Joeann embroidered bible references and names on the inner border.  Several of us each made a square.   We hand quilted the middle section as a group. I took it to church last Sunday to work on and even Skye stopped to work on her own quilt!

 I machine quilted the borders and binding so we could get it done.  I stippled (my version anyways) the inner border around the verses and names.

The outer border was just straight lines and the corners were small squares where the lines intersected.  I used khaki on the inner border and navy blue on the outer border.

The label faded a little after the washing, anyone know of a way to keep that from happening?  I had put it through my printer.

(I just really liked this picture with my shoe sticking out.  LOL)

Of course Muffin had to sit on it after I pulled it out of the dryer.

I am just so glad it is finally finished!  We had a lot of good fellowship while we worked on this quilt and had a lot of prayer time praying for Skye as we quilted it for her.
A summary of my finishes for this month.  I did get a great granny square quilt quilted, I just swapped them out.  I did finish getting all of my strips for my scrappy trip around the world sewn together and sewn into tubes, ready for the next step.  I finished several more blocks also.
I also finished my sewing tool caddy!  I'll share more pictures about that tomorrow!

So, I met all of my goals for this month, yeah!
