Pansy Cake

I've been super busy the past couple of days making a birthday cake for an eightieth birthday.  I made pansies out of buttercream for the first time.

 I make the cake and buttercream from scratch, I can't stand store bought frosting.

Miss Norma is one of the sweetest and Godliest ladies I know.  I felt honored to be able to make her cake for her.

Feline Friday and Frivolous Food

I have always loved playing play-doh.  I think that is why I like modeling with fondant on cakes!  I know that I still have a lot to learn and need more experience, but it is still fun!  My student turned 12 yesterday and her grandmother ordered a cake for her.  She has talked about wanting a pink and black cake with zebra stripes for months.  She also loves fingernail polish.

I had fun making the fingernail polish bottles.

Yesterday the cats joined me in bed before I got up.  Here are five of seven cats.

This did not last long, as soon as one woke up they started irritating each other.

Our hot water heater went out this morning so I had a very cold shower this morning.

Vintage Hats

We had our Valentine's Day banquet at church last night, Saturday night.  I figured it would be the perfect place to wear a vintage hat and matching purse.

 I borrowed the hat from my hair dresser.  She has a room full of vintage stuff, she says it is a thrift store, but most of the things aren't for sale.  LOL

 While I was waiting at the hair dresser, I was playing with her hats.  She wasn't selling them, but said I could borrow one anytime I wanted.  Please excuse my hair, like I said it was right before my appointment.  The one below was like an Egyptian style.

 She even has the old fashioned hair dryers!  LOL

I gave myself a manicure for Valentine's Day.

I had a party at my Homemaker's Group on Thursday and baked a strawberry cake.  

 For the banquet I made a sherbet punch and made the hearts out of frozen Hawaiian punch.

80's Flashback!

A friend ordered a baby shower cake for a couple of ladies at work.  I was not happy with how the colors or my writing turned out.  It does not seem to matter how long I practice, I cannot get a smooth top either.  Sigh.  At least the cake was good, I just used the recipe for a white cake out of my old Better Homes and Garden cookbook.

 We had 80's day at school.  I actually had teenagers tell me I looked awesome!  LOL

 I had a second grader who could not understand why I tore up a shirt.  I hope she does not go home and try to copy me!

I have a prayer request for ya'll.  They found a mass on or by my left ovary and a cyst on my right ovary.  They did a cat scan on Thursday and I meet with a specialty doctor on Wednesday in Springfield.  He is a gynecologist/oncologist/surgeon.  The mass is 5 1//2 inches x4x3 1/2.  If ya'll will please pray for me and the results I would appreciate it.  I'll be surprised if I do not have to have surgery to remove it.  I won't get any results from the cat scan (which cost more then what I make in two years at school!) Wednesday.

Did you grow up in the 80's?  I turned 16 in September of '89.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  A parent at school baked some cupcakes and then asked me to decorate them for the kids, so I made a turkey!  I messed up and put an extra orange feather, but that's okay.  I found a picture online for inspiration.  The turkey's body kind of slid because the frosting was too soft, but I love the way it turned out.  It looks like I did it on purpose.

We had a cold morning and since both Chris and I had the day off, we had a fire going in the fireplace.  The cats really enjoy the fire too!

Psalms 100:4  "Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name."

Horse cake

I made a cake for a friend who likes horses.  I made what is called a buttercream transfer, you can see what that is here.
I should have looked at the directions again first, because the lines look like horse brains instead of being smooth. Maybe once it has hardened I can smooth it out.
 Her husband asked me to make the cake last week for Sunday, but I told him I would be gone all day Saturday at a disaster preparedness class thingy, so I would have to bake it on Friday.  I baked the cake Friday and Saturday night she was ill and was not going to be able to make it for church on Sunday, so I offered to have it for him today.  He forgot to pick the cake up after work.  That means this cake is going to be four days old!  I hope it tastes okay!  It is a lemon cake with lemon pudding filling and buttercream frosting.
That is all I have done today, now I can get back to quilting!  LOL

Piano Cake

I've been busy making birthday cakes for friends.  I just made a cake for a set of twins at church.  Aaliyah always knows what kind of cake she wants and gives me an idea and then I can do what I want with her ideas.  Aaliyah and Aaric turned 16 on Tuesday.  They are very talented and have been teaching themselves how to play instruments using videos and books.  She wanted a "violin on one side and a banjo on the other side", sounds pretty easy.  I got permission from their mom to use fondant.  Then I remembered I have a piano "kit".  It is as old as me!  It is the old Wilton piano pan set.  Aaric plays the piano too, so it was perfect!
We didn't want fondant on the entire cake since they don't like the taste of fondant.
This is what I came up with, first I made the instruments.  I pulled out my husband's banjo and his viola to get an idea of what sizes to make them.  I then printed off pictures of other people's cakes to get ideas.  The strings was the hardest part, and I decided a gray strip with lines would be the best way to go.

 Here are the instruments before placing them on the cake.  My size proportions are kind of "off" I think.

Here is the cake.  The white with gold scroll on the top of the cake, the music stand, base and foot pedals, and bench are all plastic.  I didn't leave the candles on the cake because t would have been too "busy".

 The key board and instruments are all fondant.  The piano is cake.

Baby Shower Cake

I went to a baby shower on Saturday.  She told me I could do any cake I wanted and I wanted to make this Noah's ark cake.

 I was not very happy with the way it turned out, my giraffes are terrible!

 I had like 5 minutes to decorate the cupcakes so I made them look like water (I ran out of blue and used green on two of them!)  By the time I got there 30 minutes away, the top of the cake had been in the sun and melted.  My friend was looking at the cake upside down and thought it was a crazy woman with curly blue hair!  LOL  The cake was delicious though!  I used this recipe.

 I've been playing with My Memories some more think I am going to make a calendar.  I took pictures of mine and my husband's Christmas and combined them with my sister's Christmas to make one page!  I found a picture of my sister opening up the quilt I made her last year.
