Single Wedding Ring Quilt

This is my month to be the Sew Sweet Bee Queen.  I am going to pick a block that I picked two years ago also.  I am making a king size quilt, so I need a lot of blocks.

Below is my design wall with all of my blocks.  My quilt is going to be red, aqua, and yellow.  

We got a new kitten last night, we couldn't help it.  Could you refuse that sad face?

Maybe I can finish this quilt in 2018!  I started it in 2016.  People don't believe me when I tell them that I am slow!  Well, here is the proof.  With the help of my Sew Sweet Bee sisters in 2016, I have 15 made, they made ten, I made five.  I do have several pieces cut out waiting to be sewn together.

Feline Friday

I am very behind on the latest Sew Sweet Bee blocks.  I really liked how easy this block was, but I can't sewing everything upside down.  This block was for Elaine aka Summer Crafter

 Pippi has decided that my dress form is her new cat bed, I think she looks good in flowers!

 Cupcake loves the catnip!

 She looked so cute in this pink bow but she did not like it and took it off.

 Oreo decidedly hates pink and refused to wear it for even a second!

Apron Strings Quilt Block

I am late on June's Sew Sweet Bee block, but only three days!  I do like this block a lot!  She wanted thirties prints, but this was all I had.  Dori from The Red Feedsack gave each of us a different block from The Farmgirl Vintage book by Lori Holt to make.  I'm glad she gave me this block since I love aprons!

 This is my favorite tool for making half square triangles.  I recommend that everyone get one!

 I had helpers also.  Since I have not had time to quilt on this quilt, I'm glad Pippi is still able to use it!

 Cupcake, Oreo, and Custard were enjoying the breeze from the windows above the cutting table.

I procrastinate sewing, but once I actually start, I love it and don't want to stop!

Sew Sweet Bee

I finished my block for the Sew Sweet Bee.  I am behind on my April block because of my broken finger last month.  Denny asked us for this cute pineapple block.  She asked us to make the greenery taller by adding another row of green.

Sew Sweet Bee Block

Our queen bee for the Sew Sweet Bee this month is Cathy from a A Quilting Chick Blog.

She picked the block "first Kiss" designed by Podunk Pretties.

I really like this block.  I broke my finger, but luckily I already had the majority of the first block sewn.  I went ahead and tried sewing the second block together also.

The little iron my husband bought me at Christmas is perfect for ironing open seams.

This is a block that needs to be laid out every step of the way to make sure it does not get messed up.

I'm not really sure what happened to the block on the left, well, I guess it has to do with trying to sew, cut , and iron with a broken finger!  I'll be sending Cathy the block on the right.

I broke my finger by slamming it in a window and then the window got stuck up with my fingers stuck in between the panes.

Sweet Sewing

I've been snatching a few minutes when I can, trying to get some quilting done.

I am doing all of my quilting on my Singer Industrial 16 treadle.  Remember last week that my darning foot broke?  The new foot works okay, but I had to lower the presser foot bar thingy as far as I could to make it work.  It is also not always easy to see where the foot is going either.

 I have been quilting one color at a time.

 I can't decide if I want to quilt the blank area around the cakes.  What color thread should I use, off white?  Any suggestions on the quilting?

 Pippi was my helper last night.

 She also likes to hang out in the back of dress form.

 Here are some pictures of my classroom in my basement.  I privately tutor a homeschooled sixth grader three days a week while her grandmother is working.  I found these banners in my fabric stash.  A friend and I had made them many years ago for old fashioned Sunday at church.

 I have two strands, so I hung them in both corners, across all three windows.  I used pipe cleaners to attach them to whatever was handy.  Yes, I purposely placed those shelves under windows and put cat beds on them.  The windows are level with the ground and the cats love cat tv down there.  Muffin is in the top picture.

I also like to hang things from the beams in the ceiling since it is an unfinished ceiling.

Valentine Victory!

I finished my block for February's Sew Sweet Bee Queen.  Amy from A Quilting Sheep designed this block and is calling it the Friendship Love block.  You can find the tutorial here.

 I was trying to multi-task this morning.  I was giving myself a manicure and thought I would make my block.  I had not put the clear coat on yet.  When I was ironing this part of the block the steam transferred the red nail polish onto the white fabric.  I tried getting it off, messed it up, and had to redo that part.

I finally finished my valentines for the Valentine's Day party!  I actually finished them five days ahead of time!  They were a lot of fun to make.

 We live in a small town an hour from Springfield.  We have to go to the city about once a month or so to visit some stores we don't have local.  (The only local stores we have are Walmart and the Dollar General Store)  I try to keep myself busy in the car and I brought some hand sewing along for the ride.

Fun Fabricating on Friday

I finally got some sewing done on Friday.  I wanted to quilt all day Thursday, but I had a terrible sinus headache that kept me in bed most of the day.  I finished the first Bee block of the year for Sew Sweet Bee.  Alicia asked for the rolling stones block from Fat Quarter Shop.  I didn't have the fabric she wanted, but found the closest color, to what she wanted, that was in my stash.  I bought this Lori Holt design board at my local quilt shop, Dogwood Quilting in Ava, MO.  It is the perfect size for these 12 inch blocks.  I keep saying that I am going to make some, but never get around to it.

 I sewed the block on my featherweight.  I won this seam guide, also from Lori Holt, with some other stuff a few months ago.  I finally decided to use it on this machine.  I can change the bobbin underneath the machine without having to take the seam guide off each time I want to change the bobbin.

 I hope the adhesive does not hurt the finish on my machine, since my machine is not plastic.  It is a pretty shape though and I love that the seam guide is on both sides.

 I wasted a lot of time trying to make my machine sew, just because I forgot that a feather weight threads from right to left.  Stupid mistake since with vintage machines, you know which side to thread the needle on, according to which side the thread guide is on.  If it's on the right, thread from the right, if it's on the left, thread from the left.

 I joined my local quilt guild this past summer.  I wish I had joined it sooner!  They make a lot of charity quilts.  We met Friday morning to sew the rows together on this quilt(someone was sewing the top corner already, when I took this picture). I did not do much on this quilt, I don't trust my sewing abilities against everyone else's.  I know that I am not very good at sewing at a straight seam.  One of the members saw this block, blew it up, and made it into a big quilt by using 10 1/2 inch blocks.  I'll get a picture when they have finished quilting it.  One of the longarmers took it home to quilt and another lady will bind it.  We are donating this quilt a group who raises awareness for child abuse.  All of our quilts go to local charities.

 Pippi was sitting in my lap and that look was "No, you cannot get up and sew, you have to hold me instead."

Do you have a sewing group you are involved in?  I love being a part of a group, it helps me to get things done.

I believe this verse tells us to defend children who are being abused, these poor children have no one else to help.

Finished Flimsy!

 I am so excited to finally be finished with my top, I got all of the borders on.  I think I am going to call this my birthday cakes quilt, even though it makes me think of Neapolitan ice cream with it's colors.  I love my chocolate inner border.  It will also be the binding.

 I'm trying to decide how to quilt it.  What do you think of a cross hatch over the cakes and FMQ around the cupcakes in the border, with thin lines on the chocolate border?  Or would a stitch in the ditch around all of the cakes and their layers?  I'm open to any ideas.

I sewed the sashing and borders on with my Singer 66, with Lotus decals, treadle.  I have often been asked how hard it is to control my material while I treadle, you can see how I slow down when I adjust my material.  I didn't bother pinning it together, but it probably would have made it easier.  I don't like wearing shoes when I sew, I like to be able to "feel" with my feet, althoough I'm sure it really does not matter.

Cake Block Patterns

I made two blocks for my birthday cake quilt.  I loved this pattern from Homespun Handmaiden.  She made me this block:  Here is her free pattern for this block.

This is the block I made.  Do not use the polyester ric rac from Walmart, it melts!  I decided that I did not want to redo the block though.  I also decorate cakes and felt the wavy ric-rac was more cake like.  If you do add ric-rac to any of these cake patterns, be sure to add them before adding the sides of the block.  I glued the ric-rac on using a glue that does not wash off so I would not have to sew it on.  Only the sides are sewn into the block.

 I will have one row of blocks that is 12 by 16 because the pattern by Fat Quarter Shop is just so cute!  One of my Sew Sweet Bee sisters sent me this block:  Which is why I made one of this pattern.  One more block is coming (she is redoing her kitchen, so kind of busy) and I asked her to make this block also, which will give me three for this row, including mine.
The rest of my blocks are 12 by 12 inches.

This is the block I made.  I used good quality ric-rac on this block, it was much easier to work with.  You can get the pattern here.

The other pattern used was from Lori Holt at Bee in My Bonnet.  The blocks sent to me from were these blocks:  The chocolate cake was made up by the person who sent it, she combined this pattern and the pattern above, to make it.  You can get the Lori Holt pattern here.  Donna combined that pattern with this pattern to include the bow that I love.

 The red cake is a paper pieced pattern on Craftsy, you can find it here. 

Peggy's triple layer sprinkled cake filled with strawberry layers was her own creation I believe.

When I made my two blocks I tried to include colors from all of the blocks.  Since one of the cakes had chocolate, I knew I needed to add the chocolate sprinkles material (found in my stash) to my blocks to bring in more brown.  I knew the cherries in my triple layer cake would bring in some more of the red.  I also tried to include the blue and green that some of the other cakes had.  The sashing will be a pink calico.
